Hippkids helps develop literacy and communication skills among hearing impaired children. Reading and writing are so crucial to academic achievement and future life success, but many hearing impaired children struggle with learning these skills. Studies have shown that having only a mild hearing loss can delay reading development skills with approximately
one in five hearing impaired students graduating from high school having reading skills at or below the second grade level. Recent research indicates that children identified with a hearing loss who begin intervention services early can develop language skills on par with their hearing peers. Hippkids was designed to develop communication and literacy skills in a fun and engaging way!
Hippkids allows children to feel connected to a larger community. Children with hearing loss often report feeling isolated, particularly when they do not know others with a hearing impairment. Furthermore, it has been shown that children with hearing loss struggle in social situations and are often bullied at rates two times that of the general population. Hippkids promotes self advocacy and helps hearing impaired children navigate through the social-emotional challenges they may face. Hippkids provides a community of others who understand the challenges of living with a hearing loss.
Hippkids connects children and teens worldwide, fostering friendships and inclusivity. My simple idea has grown into a worldwide program connecting over 260 children and teens in nine countries as pen pals, building a worldwide community of friendship and support. I hope you will join the hippkids community!
Welcome to hippkids!
Hippkids is a pen pal program specifically designed to bring children and teens with hearing loss together to foster friendship, inclusion and community. Even though hearing loss is one of the world's most common disabilities, you might not know another young person or adult with hearing loss in your local community. Through Hippkids, you can be connected to other children and teens so that you can express yourself, share experiences, and increase your reading, writing, and vocabulary skills in a fun, inclusive environment. Make life-long friends and connect with others from wherever you are in the world!
